Newbattle Abbey and the Site of Inveresk Roman Fort

Newbattle Abbey was founded in 1140, burned by the English in 1385, 1544 and 1548: what remained in 1587 became part of a mansion for the Marquis of Lothian. It experienced extension, modification and finally conversion for use as a college. It is also home to Archaeology Scotland and we have arranged to be shown around by Jane Miller. In the afternoon we will visit the site of the Roman Fort at Inveresk, near Musselburgh.

Please bring a packed lunch and wear appropriate clothing.
