Midhope Castle and Abercorn Church
Midhope Castle was first mentioned in 1458, occupied in 1582 by Alexander Drummond and his wife Marjorie Bruce. In 1678 the castle was acquired by John Hope and is now part of the Hopetoun Estate. Parts of Abercorn Church date from the 1100s, but it was subject to a major rebuild in 1893. Archbishop Trumwine, a Northumbrian, was appointed here in 681 AD. There are some old gravestones from the 1600s, and a museum that houses Viking hog-back burial stones and a carved cross-shaft dating back to the 600s.
Please bring a packed lunch and wear appropriate clothing.
